CANARIES & FINCHES AS PETS

Canaries are delightful little birds that are fun to watch and listen to. They can fill the tiniest dark apartment with joyful noise and not ruffle the feathers of many landlords. They are relatively easy and inexpensive to keep.

They work well with other finches in large aviaries and can be housed in together in larger groups if you provide multiple food and water sources and plenty of perches.

PLEASE NOTE: Large aviaries filled with multiple species of finches and several canaries is not recommended for the average canary pet owner.

However, never keep just 2 or 3 males together! Ultimately they will fight or one will persistently drive the others away from food and water. During the breeding season they will fight seriously. It just doesn’t work.

One single male can live quite happily by himself. If you are really worried about him being lonely, consider a separate cage for another male or even a hen. This will increase your songs but keep the peace at the same time.

They are never going to be cuddly pets. They are not the kind of bird that will enjoy riding on your shoulder. I have hand fed a few and they do become tame and are quite delightful but they still never become as interactive or “affectionate” as a bird from the parrot family might. Since they don’t “need” much attention from humans, they do make great little pets for people who need to be away from home a lot.

This is NOT normal canary behavior. This American Singer was handfed since hatching and continues to be hand-fed treats daily to keep it tame.
